The Home School S.C.H.O.L.A.R. Curriculum

S.C.H.O.L.A.R stands for South Carolina History, Operative Learning, and Academic Research. This program has been developed around the Home Schooled Student.

Students spend three days at the South Carolina Archives and History Center. For two days, they research a South Carolina history topic and participate in the following sessions:

  • how to do research
  • how to develop a thesis statement and support it
  • how to make a bibliography
  • how to present a research topic.

On the third day the students present their research topic in one of five ways:

  • an exhibit
  • a performance
  • a documentary
  • a historical paper
  • a website

Judges will evaluate their presentation using set curriculum objectives: bibliography precision, proper use and understanding of sources, thesis strength and support, historic accuracy, presentation clarity. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be individually awarded based on score of evaluation. There is no competition between students. Students may participate in 4th-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade divisions.
