Step 1:

Explain the basic format of National History Day


Tell your students:

  1. They will either choose or be assigned a historical research topic relating to the annual theme.

  2. They will develop the topic into one of the following: 
    • an Exhibit
    • a Performance, 
    • a Documentary or 
    • a Historical Paper

     
      3.    They may work by themselves or in a group of 2, 3, 4,
             or 5. If a student chooses to write a paper, he or she
             will work alone.

      4.   All entrants will use the historical research methodology
            of a historian in developing their topics.
