Awarded at the NHD in SC Contest


South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board announces new National History Day Travel Scholarship
The State Historical Records Advisory Board (SC SHRAB) has recently approved $500 for travel grants for South Carolina students who qualify for the national contest of National History Day held each year at the University of Maryland in College Park. Students can apply for the grant after the state contest of National History Day in South Carolina. The grant stipulates two criteria:

  • Economic need
  • Documented use of primary resources from a South Carolina Historical Records Repository

An application will be enclosed in each packet given to the national qualifiers at the state contest. Depending on the situation the funds may be awarded as one grant of $500 or two grants of $250. The South Caroliniana Prize for Best Entry on a South Carolina Topic
The South Carolina Archives and History Center and National History Day in South Carolina are pleased to announce that the University South Caroliniana Society is sponsoring the South Caroliniana Prize for best entry on a South Carolina topic at the National History Day in South Carolina’s state contest. The entry must demonstrate exemplary research using predominantly primary sources. Consideration will be given to new, and innovative research, as well as examination of lesser-known South Carolina topics and sources. This prize, in the amount of $250 will be awarded to the best entry meeting these requirements in both junior and senior divisions.
 
The Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies Award for Best Historical Paper in the Junior and Senior Divisions
The Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies awards a $100 US Savings Bond to the best Historical Paper in the Junior and Senior divisions. The Historical Paper category is the only category at the South Carolina state contest that makes a distinction between the two first place gold medalists.
 
The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission Prize for Best Entry on an African American History Topic
The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission is pleased to announce their sponsorship for the Best Entry on African American History at the National History Day in South Carolina’s state contest.  The entry must demonstrate exemplary research and historical content on an African American history topic.  Priority will be given to topics relating to African American history in South Carolina.  This prize, in the amount of $250, will be awarded to the best entry meeting these requirements.
 
UNESCO TST Curriculum Initiative at the College of Charleston, Program in the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World National History Day Award
This award is for the best National History Day entry relating to any aspect of the history and life of the Carolina Lowcountry and/or the Atlantic World or any aspect addressing the aims of the UNESCO TST Curriculum Initiative.  Two awards will be given: one in the Junior category and one in the Senior category.  The award carries a cash award of $50 each.  Carolina Lowcountry and/or the Atlantic World Criteria – the entry must focus on those links or connections between the Lowcountry and elsewhere in the Atlantic World, including influences into the Lowcountry and influences emanating out from the Lowcountry, and common themes or development within the Atlantic World, in order to assess both similar and disparate experiences.
 
The South Carolina Bar's Law Related Education Division Prize for Best Entry Related to Legal Justice in America
The South Carolina Bar's law Related Education Division is pleased to announce their sponsorship for best entry related to legal justice in America.  This prize will be in the amount of $500.

Travel Scholarships and other grants awarded at Regional History Day contests within South Carolina:

Region 2
Columbia Committee of the Colonial Dames of America Award for best historical paper in the Junior Division
The Columbia Committee of the Colonial Dames of America awards a prize of $100 for the best entry in Junior Historical Paper. This is the only category at the Region 2 contest in South Carolina that makes a distinction between the three state qualifiers that advance to the state contest.
